The role of the architect in redeveloping vacant spaces has become increasingly important in these present times of economic crisis. The project began by being critical towards the more “stylistic” forms of temporary architecture that have become almost a norm within these spaces. Questions were raised as to the future of the vacant spaces after such events have come and gone. The project looks at alternate models of temporary architecture; to be more specific, recurrent temporary programming as a response to vacancy. The research done was more towards identifying and analysing instances from everyday life that are of a recurrent nature. For example, the markets that occur on a weekly basis on different days throughout the Netherlands; the tea and food vendors with their stalls found on street corners in India, sometimes testing out new locations etc. These instances were compiled to form a map of temporariness, which was done to understand the spatial implications behind these interventions and also to indicate the feasibility of their occurrences.During the course of research about the various temporary activites which have been taking place around Europe, a pattern of temporary programs which could be configured according to specific scenarios was also found. The outcome is a phased usage of the nature of the instances observed above to address vacancy. It is an attempt at organizing the existing programs that we are familiar with on a regular basis in a more cohesive manner. An initial group of activities can be formed to create an awareness about the building. This can be followed by incorporating programs on a recurrent basis. A temporary roving community called the Wanderers, is envisioned as a vehicle to carry out these scenarios. As a demonstrative example, the Holendrecht Centre in Amstel III, Amsterdam is the chosen site of intervention. The Wanderers are a community of temporary users who accomodate different typologies of temporary programs, occupying the vacant spaces to create a street-like atmosphere within to attract the public to it. The result being that if one is in search of a specific program, he must move from one vacant space to another where it next occurs or wait until it recurs in the same building. However if he wishes to surprise himself then he can visit the same building and encounter a different mix of programs every week! By looking at planning for recurrent interventions in a single building, and not just isolated one-offs, we can ensure a higher likelihood of building eventually finding life.
