New Van Bhavan is an office complex designed for the Forest Department of Madhya Pradesh in Bhopal, India. The design concept for the project proposes a simulation of a forest environment on the 11.8 acre site. Fluid spaces for the offices are inserted carefully into the ecologies of land and water. The project is designed for LEED Gold certification. I was involved in preparing presentation and working drawings, design development and structure concepts, co-ordinating between the structural & service consultants and first-hand interaction with the clients.
There are 4 major departments in the complex :
a) Forest department
b) Eco-tourism development
c) Corporation
d) Federation
These are housed in 3 blocks : Block A, Block C1, BLock C2. The Forest Department of Madhya Pradesh had a detailed set of requirements that had to be accomodated within the building. Hierarchy of officers within departments, required no. of staff per dept., storages within work spaces, lunch rooms, waiting lounges, reprographic rooms, conference rooms etc. were some of them. The 3-4 level offices are designed across smooth flowing floor plates thereby making the movement between departments, seamless. Specific programs like Satellite Surveillance Unit, VIP conference & dining rooms, auditorium etc. are located on the criss-crossing brigdes. Facade generative exercises with both aluminium and RCC fins, in terms of size and number of openings with respect to the building’s orientation was also carried out. Capsule columns, single and double glazing with an RCC lintel band on the periphery of the structure are some of its features.
